Terms of Use
Last updated: 5 September 2026
The short version
Stringer is a private fishing logbook that lives on your phone. These terms are the agreement between you and the developer of Stringer — "we" — about using it. Three things up front, because they are the ones anglers actually ask about:
- Your logbook is yours. Your catches, photos, notes and spots belong to you. We claim no ownership of them and no right to publish them.
- An achievement you earn is never taken away. Not when you edit a catch, not when the rules change, not ever.
- Stringer does not know the fishing rules where you are. Licences, seasons and limits are on you.
The rest of this document is the detail. If you do not agree with it, please do not use the app.
Accepting these terms
Installing or using Stringer means you accept these terms. If you are using it on behalf of someone else, you are confirming you may agree on their behalf.
You must be at least 13 years old. Stringer is not directed at children under 13. If you are under 18, use it with a parent or guardian's permission, and they accept these terms too — especially the part about purchases.
Your licence to use Stringer
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Stringer on Apple-branded devices you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in Apple's App Store Terms of Service. The app is licensed to you, not sold, and we keep every right we do not grant here.
- Do not sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute the app.
- Do not reverse-engineer, decompile or modify it, except where the law says you may regardless of what an agreement claims.
- Do not work around a purchase, an entitlement check, or a free-tier limit.
- Do not use the app to build a competing product, or scrape its species and achievement data for one.
The licence ends when you stop using Stringer, or if we end it as described in "Ending this agreement".
Your logbook is yours
Everything you put into Stringer — catches, photos, notes, gear, spots — is your content, and it stays yours.
- We claim no ownership of it.
- We take no licence to publish, display, syndicate or reuse it. There is no feed, no follower list, and no mechanism in the app that shows another angler where you fish. That is a product promise as well as a legal one, and it matches our privacy policy.
- If you make a share card, you choose to share it, and what happens to it after that is between you and wherever you posted it. A share card never contains your coordinates.
- You are responsible for having the right to any photo you add — do not add someone else's photo and treat it as yours.
- Exporting your own data is free and always will be. Settings → Export my data gives you your catches, gear and achievements as spreadsheet files plus your photos. We will never put your own records behind a payment.
Stringer Pro
Stringer has a free tier and a paid tier called Stringer Pro. If the version you have installed does not yet offer Pro, this section simply does not apply to you yet.
Pro is sold through the App Store as three products:
- aj.pro.monthly — an auto-renewable subscription billed monthly.
- aj.pro.yearly — an auto-renewable subscription billed annually, which may include an introductory free trial.
- aj.pro.lifetime — a one-time purchase. It does not renew and is not a subscription.
How the billing works:
- The paywall shows the actual price and billing term of each plan before you buy, in your local currency. That is the amount you will be charged.
- A subscription renews automatically until you cancel. Apple charges your Apple Account within 24 hours before the current period ends, at the price for the next period.
- Cancel any time in App Store settings — on your device, Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you have already paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- If a free trial is offered and you subscribe before it ends, any unused part of the trial is forfeited, which is Apple's rule for all apps.
- Apple is the merchant. Apple takes the payment, holds the receipt and handles refunds under the App Store Terms of Sale. We never see your card details and we cannot issue a refund — ask Apple, through reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Restore Purchases on the paywall re-applies a purchase you already made on the same Apple Account, including a lifetime purchase after a reinstall.
- If we change a subscription price, Apple will tell you and ask for your consent before charging the new amount.
- Free-tier limits never destroy your data. If you log 400 catches on Pro and then stop paying, all 400 stay in your book: readable, browsable and exportable. You just cannot add a new one until you subscribe again. We do not delete or hide what you already recorded.
Apple's part in this
Apple requires us to say the following, and we agree to it:
- This agreement is between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for Stringer or for anything in it.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Stringer.
- If Stringer fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app to you. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation of any kind with respect to Stringer.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for any claim that Stringer or your use of it infringes someone's intellectual-property rights, and for any product liability, legal or regulatory claim about the app.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you as a user of Stringer.
- You may only use Stringer where United States export law, and the law of the place you obtained it, allow. You may not use or export it into an embargoed country, and you confirm you are not on a US government restricted-parties list.
Fishing regulations are your responsibility
Stringer does not provide fishing regulations. You are responsible for knowing and following the license requirements, seasons, size limits, and catch limits where you fish.
Nothing in the app — an achievement, a prompt, a suggested species, a target you are close to — is a statement that a fish is in season, legal to keep, or legal to catch where you are. Stringer records what you tell it. It does not check it against any regulation, and it never will unless we say so explicitly.
What the app infers, and where it can be wrong
Some of what you see in Stringer is derived or estimated rather than measured. Treat all of it as a convenience, not as fact:
- Weather and conditions come from Apple Weather for a point near where you logged the catch. They are a forecast or a regional observation, not a measurement taken at your boat.
- Water-body names and water type come from Apple's reverse geocoding and from our own inference. The name can be missing or wrong, and the water type is a first guess that you can always override.
- Sunrise, sunset and moon phase are computed on your device so they work offline. They are accurate to about a minute or two, which is fine for filling in a log entry and not fine for anything else.
- Estimated weight is calculated from the length you entered using a standard length-weight formula for the species. It is an estimate, clearly marked as one, and it is not a substitute for a scale. Do not submit it as a record or tournament weight.
Do not use Stringer for navigation, and do not use it to decide whether it is safe to go out. Check a real marine or weather source for that.
Achievements stay earned
Once you earn an achievement in Stringer, it is yours to keep.
- We will never revoke an earned achievement. If you edit a catch afterwards and it no longer meets the requirement — you correct a 22-inch bass to 18 inches — the badge stays. Deleting the catch that earned it does not take it back either.
- We may add new achievements, or correct a definition that was wrong. When we do, your whole book is re-evaluated, so anything you already qualified for unlocks retroactively. That re-evaluation only ever adds; it cannot take one away.
- Achievements are a record of your own logbook, kept on your device. They are not a prize, a competition result, or a verified claim about a fish, and they have no cash value.
Acceptable use
Do not use Stringer to break the law — including fishing law — and do not use it to harass, endanger or expose anyone. Do not attempt to disrupt, overload or gain unauthorised access to any service the app talks to. Do not add content you have no right to add.
Ending this agreement
You can end it at any time by deleting the app. If you want your data gone first, export it and delete your catches from inside the app.
We can suspend or end your licence if you materially break these terms — typically for something in "Acceptable use" — and we will tell you why where we can. Ending the licence does not entitle you to a refund from us, because we never took the payment; refunds are Apple's, as described above. Sections that by their nature should survive — your content rights, disclaimers, limits on liability, and governing law — survive the end of this agreement.
No warranty
Stringer is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not promise that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that anything it infers about weather, water or fish will be accurate.
Some places do not allow these exclusions. Where that is the case, this section applies only as far as the law allows, and you may have rights we cannot limit.
Limits on liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, lost profits, or personal injury arising from your use of Stringer — including anything that happens on the water. Our total liability to you for any claim relating to Stringer is limited to the amount you paid for it in the twelve months before the claim, or $50 USD, whichever is greater.
This limit does not apply where the law does not allow it, including for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Idaho, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute goes to the courts of that place. If you are a consumer somewhere with stronger local protections, this does not take those away.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change materially, the app will show you the change before it takes effect, the same way the privacy policy works. The date at the top always reflects the current version. Continuing to use Stringer after a change means you accept it.
